Sahih Bukhari · Hadith 7642

حدثنا حجاج بن منهال، حدثنا هشيم، عن أبي بشر، عن سعيد بن جبير، عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما قال كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم متواريا بمكة، وكان يرفع صوته، فإذا سمع المشركون سبوا القرآن ومن جاء به، فقال الله عز وجل لنبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏{‏ولا تجهر بصلاتك ولا تخافت بها‏}‏

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet was hiding himself in Mecca and used to recite the (Qur'an) in a loud voice. When the pagans heard him they would abuse the Qur'an and the one who brought it, so Allah said to His Prophet: 'Neither say your prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110)
