The Dictations · Hadith 233 (#Ḥadīth #17)

233 / 17 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا محمد ابن الحسين بن أبي الخطاب، عن عيسى بن عبد الله العلوي، عن أبيه عبد الله بن محمد بن عمر بن علي بن أبي طالب، عن أبيه، عن جده، عن علي (عليه السلام)، قال: سألت رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) عن الرجل ينام فيرى الرؤيا، فربما كانت حقا، وربما كانت باطلا. فقال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يا علي، ما من عبد ينام إلا عرج بروحه إلى رب العالمين، فما رأى عند رب العالمين فهو حق، ثم إذا أمر الله العزيز الجبار برد روحه إلى جسده فصارت الروح بين السماء والارض، فما رأته فهو أضغاث أحلام (1).

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abu’l Khattab narrated to us from `Isa b. `Abdullah al-`Alawi from his father `Abdullah b. Muhammad b. `Umar b. `Ali b. Abu Talib from his father from his grandfather from `Ali . He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (s) about the man who sleeps and then dreams. So sometimes it is true and sometimes it is false. The Messenger of Allah (s) said: O `Ali! There is no servant who sleeps but that he is raised with his spirit towards the Lord of the worlds. So, what he sees near the Lord of the worlds is the truth. Then when Allah, the Mighty, the Omnipotent orders with the return of his spirit to his body, the spirit is between the heaven and the Earth. So, what it sees [then] are confused dreams.
