The Dictations · Hadith 238 (#Ḥadīth #22)

22 - حدثنا الشيخ الفقيه أبو جعفر، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أحمد السناني، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أبي عبد الله الكوفي، عن موسى بن عمران النخعي، عن عمه الحسين بن يزيد النوفلي، عن علي بن سالم، عن أبيه، عن ثابت بن دينار، قال: سألت زين العابدين علي بن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب (عليهم السلام) عن الله جل جلاله: هل يوصف بمكان؟ فقال: تعالى الله عن ذلك. قلت: فلم أسرى بنبيه محمد (صلى الله عليه وآله) إلى السماء؟ قال: ليريه ملكوت السماوات، وما فيها من عجائب صنعه وبدائع خلقه. قلت: فقول الله عزوجل: (ثم دنا فتدلى * فكان قاب قوسين أو أدنى) (1)؟ قال: ذلك رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) دنا من حجب النور، فرأى ملكوت السماوات، ثم تدلى (صلى الله عليه وآله) فنظر من تحته إلى ملكوت الارض حتى ظن أنه في القرب من الارض كقاب قوسين أو أدنى (2).

Abu Ja`far narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Kufi narrated to us from Musa b. `Imran al-Nakha`I from his uncle al-Husayn b. Yazid al-Nawfali from `Ali b. Salim from his father from Thabit b. Dinar. He said: I asked Zayn al-`Abidin `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib about Allah – is He described with a place? So, he said: Allah is exalted from that. I said: Then why did He bring His Prophet, Muhammad (s), to heaven? He said: To show him the kingdom of heaven; the wonder of its design and the contrivance of its creation. I said: [What about] the saying of Allah, “Then he drew near and hung suspended, that he was only two bow-lengths away and even closer.” (53:8-9)? He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) drew near to the veils of light and saw the kingdom of heaven. Then, he (s) hung suspended and saw the kingdom of Earth beneath him, till he thought that he was near the Earth like that of two bow-lengths away and even closer.
