Chapter 18 | Punishment of the proud

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ طَلْحَهَ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: لَا یَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّهَ عَبْدٌ فِی قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّهٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ کِبْرٍ وَ لَا یَدْخُلُ النَّارَ عَبْدٌ فِی قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّهٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ* مِنْ إِیمَانٍ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاکَ إِنَ الرَّجُلَ لَیَلْبَسُ الثَّوْبَ وَ یَرْکَبُ الدَّابَّهَ فَیَکَادُ یَعْرِفُ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ الْکِبْرَ قَالَ لَیْسَ ذَلِکَ بِکِبْرٍ إِنَّمَا الْکِبْرُ إِنْکَارُ الْحَقِّ وَ الْإِیمَانُ إِقْرَارٌ بِالْحَقِّ.

5. And from the previous chain from Ahmad b. Abi Abdillah from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from Ali b. al-Nu’man from Abdillah b. Talha from Abi Abdillah who said: “A person who has pride in his heart equal to even a small grain will not enter Paradise and a person who has faith in his heart equal to even a small grain will not enter Hell.” The narrator asked, “When a person wears good clothes and rides a mount, he feels proud.” Imam replied, “This is not pride. Pride means to reject the truth and faith means to accept it.”
