Chapter 6 | Wearing Black

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) بِالْحِيرَةِ فَأَتَاهُ رَسُولُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْخَلِيفَةِ يَدْعُوهُ فَدَعَا بِمِمْطَرٍ أَحَدُ وَجْهَيْهِ أَسْوَدُ وَ الْآخَرُ أَبْيَضُ فَلَبِسَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَمَا إِنِّي أَلْبَسُهُ وَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لِبَاسُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ .

2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hudhafah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah , in al-Hirah (a city in Iraq) when the messenger of abu Ja‘far al-Mansur, the caliph came to call him. He (the Imam) asked for a raincoat, one side black and the other side white, and abu ‘Abd Allah , said, ‘I wear it but I know that it is the dress of the people of fire.”” (Black was the emblem of al-‘Abbaside rulers. Imam wore it due to Taqiyah (caution because of fear)
